Charity

As part of this adventure we will be supporting charity and raising money. While this trip is intended to be a fun adventure holiday for us there will be an element of challenge. Part of this comes from the tiny car, tiny engine, as well as miles and miles of unpaved roads (and undoubtedly many more challenges will be faced). We’ve picked a UK based charity, a global charity and one based close to home at Lancaster University.

Mind

UK based charity, Mind focuses on mental health – in short they provide advice and support to people struggling with mental health difficulties, as well as awareness campaigns, improving services, and improving the general understanding of mental health. Multiple members of our team have friends and family who have struggled from mental health related issues so this is a large part of why we’ve chosen to raise money for Mind because no one should suffer on their own, and no one should find it hard to reach out for help.

ShelterBox

Based near Travis’s home town, ShelterBox is a charity that he’s raised money for in the past and we all felt that supporting a charity which works on a large scale across the globe would be fitting for the international adventure we will be taking on.

Operating on a more global scale, ShelterBox provides essential care for those who have lost homes as a result of natural disasters or humanitarian crises. Whilst providing basic temporary shelter to families before they can rebuild a life for themselves, they also provide cooking equipment, blankets/warm clothing, solar powered lights, water purification equipment, tools and so on. Defying Dementia

Defying Dementia is a charity based within Lancaster University, where half of the team have studied. We wanted to fundraise for a group close to home that does important work to tackle dementia, which is evermore crucial amongst the ageing population.

Research on dementia related diseases is the only chance of finding better treatment in the future and that’s what Defying Dementia has invested in with research into Parkinson’s, Motor Neurone Disease, and in particular, Alzheimer’s which has lead to trials of new drugs and treatments.
